Our work is focused in the “South,” a region defined by geography, culture, and history, as well as by its peculiar history of racial and economic exploitation. The region includes the southeast states from Virginia to the eastern portion of Texas. Culturally and historically, the region’s identify was shaped by slavery, by a commitment to independence, and by structural poverty and the absence of social and material infrastructures. Today, the citizens of this region confront monumental barriers when they act to improve the quality of their lives. The institutions of the South have a well-deserved reputation for throwing up barriers to public access and participation.
