Jackson State University, Roadmapping Disparities:

The Jackson Roadmapping Project seeks to improve the coordination, and therefore the effectiveness, of the efforts to eliminate health disparities in Jackson, and across Mississippi.

The Roadmap aims to:

  • Assist those working on health disparities to improve their outcomes through identifying key areas of focus.

  • Provide an opportunity for the community to express their misgivings and barriers that create health disparities in an effort to address and ultimately eliminate them.

  • Identify, for purposes of efficient networking and reducing redundancy, the overlap among the interests and needs of community, local, state, and national stakeholder.

The Roadmap is therefore one created by the people in Jackson. It is an opportunity to review and update a strategic vision for the city and state.

Most significantly, the “Roadmap” project also utilizes approaches pioneered in participatory research. This means that all project elements are built upon open and equitable partnerships between those affected by a problem and those attempting to assist them.

Participatory research proceeds from the assumption that no complex community problem is soluble without constant and thorough community participation. Furthermore, from planning to follow-up, all participants are equals—from community members, to the researchers, to policy makers.
